How to Take Compliments

compliments Yesterday we talked about self-confidence. Something I have noticed with people who lack confidence or positive esteem is they are unable to take complements. A simple to thank a person for a compliment can go a long way, yet it is amazing when you consider that most of us are not very good at accepting compliments, and often answer compliments by selling ourselves short.

"That’s a  great outfit you’re wearing!"
"Really? I think it makes me look fat."
"I love your hair today."
"Really I think it looks awful. I hate it!"

By doing this, we give the message that the person who made the compliment is being insincere or that he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about.  Try these steps so you can feel better about taking a nice complement.

Steps

  1. Do not shrink back, and act timid.
  2. Thank them, possibly return a compliment.
  3. If they compliment your clothes or shoes don’t say "Oh, this old thing?" as it is rude, if they truly think it is nice.
  4. If they compliment your clothes or shoes don’t say "Thanks! They were having a great sale at ______" or whatever" as it is rude, if they truly think it is nice. The exception to this is if you want your friend to be able to get in on the great deal too (for example, "Thanks! I got such a great deal on it too … it was reduced 75% - can you believe it? A $100 sweater for $25!").
  5. Instead, try something like: "Thanks, I like them too".
  6. Refrain from saying "Thanks! I paid a lot for it, it should be nice" or anything similar. I believe the reason why is quite obvious.

Tips

  • Try not to think of ways to get around the topic. If they took the time to compliment you, it was definitely genuine, and should be handled as so.
  • Remember that you are just as entitled to receive compliments as everyone else.
  • Just say "Thank you". It’s not hard, and it’ll close the subject quickly and gracefully.

You may feel awkward at first, but gradually accepting compliments with grace will become second nature to you and you will feel better about yourself.

This is Tyler Woods saying walk in peace today.

Why is Self-Confidence Important?

confidence Self-confidence is one of the most important things you can have. Self-confidence reflects your assessment of your own self-worth. It will play a large part in determining your happiness through life. Self-confidence allows you to take risks, as you have enough confidence in your own abilities to be sure that if things do go wrong, you can put things right.

In general, self-confidence is best improved by installing positive thoughts about your abilities (what you can achieve or learn to achieve): I can succeed at whatever I want, I can learn any skill, etc. As a strategy, you should look for any negative thoughts about what you can do and replace them with the opposite, positive thought.

Build self-confidence by:
* Free yourself from “should’s”.  The  “Should’s” distract us from identifying and fulfilling our own needs, abilities, interests and personal goals.  Find out what you want and what you are good at, value those, and take actions designed to fulfill your potential.

* Respect your own needs.  Recognize and take care of your own needs first!

* Talk to yourself positively.  Stop listening to your “inner critic”.

* Experience success.  Seek out and put yourself in situations in which the probability of success is high.

* Solve problems.  Don’t avoid problems, and don’t worry about them.

* Make decisions.  Practice making and implementing positive decisions and trust yourself to deal with the consequences.

* Emphasize your strengths.  Focus on what you can do rather than what you cannot.

* Rely on your own opinion of yourself.  Everyone has an opinion but depend on your own values in making decisions.

The strategy is to reinforce positive thoughts. No matter how bad things are, you need to admit that you have succeeded at times. Find and do all you can and get your brain used to looking in a positive direction.

This is Tyler Woods with today’s tip and whatever you do today, walk in peace.

Understanding ADHD

ritalin-os_sm Rather than looking at ADHD as a label and give our young children harmful stimulants, maybe it’s time to start to look at our children on a more holistic level. Remember a holistic perspective is an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness.

The first thing to look at with ADHD is your child’s diet. A healer once said to me, if it doesn’t grow or swim, don’t eat it! Also if it comes in a cellophane wrapper, don’t eat it, if you can’t pronounce what is in it don’t eat it, take away 90% of all sugars and you are well on your way to a healthier child.

Other things you can do to help your child with ADHD, turn off the TV, toss out the computer games and do something with your child! See it’s your choice. You want your child to be healthy? Follow some guidelines. Will your child like it? Nope! Down the road will they thank you? YEP!

Get Attend for your child. It is a natural homoeopathic that WORKS. Parents seem to be jumping for joy with Attend and the results are not only positive, it is far safer than stimulants that are given to our children.

The Principles of Holistic Medicine

plain As a holistic mental health practitioner, I am board certified with the American Alternative Medical Association. (AAMA) It is vital that people know how important board certified practitioners are and what our primary goal is. So for today, I want to offer you some places that ensure that you are seeing a professional. Anymore in today’s world, people read a few books, and hang up a certificate, however training and certification is vital. Check to see if who you seek out is part of any of these associations. If you are a practitioner, then by all means join these associations.

Remember that it is your health. Making sure someone is certified and belongs to associations is important to your well being. It is important that we keep natural healing and health up to standards and there are associations that help promote that integrity.

Love and Fear and Hormones

love peace I love to talk about fear. Come we all have it, but so many people wont admit it. Sometimes fear all comes down to love and fear. Some would even say that is hormonal. Love is an expression of some sort of truth and fear is based on an irrational belief.

Fear and love can have a profound effect on our health. Oxytocin (also known as the hug hormone) helps induce emotional bonding, labor, and lactation. It can also counter the affects of cortisol. Negative effects of continued stress on the body and mind are related to elevated levels of cortisol. These include: chronic anxiety and depression, emotional over-reaction, negativity, weight gain, heart disease, high-blood pressure, and weakened immunity. Basically, when we come from a place of love rather than fear, our overall health improves and research and science can now prove it!

Fear—Cortisol

Aggression, arousal, anxiety, feeling stressed-out, activates addictions, depression, breaks down muscles, bones, and joints, depresses immune system, increases pain

clogs arteries, promotes heart disease, and high-blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, decreases work production and motivation.

Love—Oxytocin

Anti-stress hormone, feeling calm and connected, increased curiosity

Lessens cravings and addictions, oxytocin appears to be a major reason as to why SSRIs ease depression, positive feelings, facilitates learning, promotes healthy social behavior, repairs, heals, and restores, faster wound healing, diminishes sense of pain,

lowers blood pressure, protects against heart disease, increases work productivity and motivation.

How we create Fear

We weave these stories we tell ourselves. Let’s say we have a story about how we will never move ahead in the world. So how do we get the story to jell?

a) We make a up storyline.
b) We gather a cast of characters.
c) We assign the cast their roles.
d) We create situations that hold us back.
e) We put our cast to work.
f) We put the voices of fear and doubt into action.
g) We turn our story into reality.
h) We tell the story.

Most stories we tell, have strong negative emotions with threads of fear woven into them. This presence stunts our growth, and helps us to remain in fear and the associated emotions and feelings.

So do yourself a favor today, keep your hormones in check, stop creating stories, and fear will walk right past you.

FIVE FINGER RELAXATION

namaste  Today I want to do a little something different and offer you a quick stress reliving exercise that can help you remain stress free today. I hope this gets you through any sort of stress, or just naturally relaxes you. It is important to remember that you can use this technique when ever you feel stress or just need to let go of your day.

1. Close your eyes

2. Place your thumb on your index finger As you do this, go back in your mind to a time when your body felt pleasantly exhausted. A time when you had spent the day in healthy physical pursuits and experienced that happy feeling of being healthily tired and ready to fall into a long and well-earned sleep. Recall that feeling in your body now. Recall a time in your life when that was the way you often felt. Let your body experience that feeling through the power of your mind.

Enjoy the feeling

3. Place your thumb on your middle finger

When you feel the touch of your thumb and middle finger, go back to a time in your life when you had successfully completed a large or long-term project. It could be achieving a diploma, saving up the deposit for your home, delivering a child. Try to choose something that took effort on your part and recapture that powerful feeling of personal accomplishment.

Enjoy that feeling.

4. Place your thumb on your ring finger In your mind, transport yourself to the most beautiful place you have ever been to. Immerse yourself in the surroundings by using all your senses. In your minds’ eye, see the exquisite beauty of nature before you, touch and feel the textures that surrounded you at that time. Smell any fragrances that were present and hear the sounds that surrounded you at the time.

Still relaxed, enjoy the feeling.

5. Place your thumb on your little finger

As you feel skin on skin, think about the nicest compliment that anyone has said to you. Experience the pleasure you felt in hearing those comforting and reassuring words. Accept the compliment and let it fill your body with a feeling of joy. By accepting the compliment you are also respecting the person who gave it to you.

Keep enjoying the feeling

Practice this routine on a daily basis so that it forms a habit and each of the feelings accompanying each section of the exercise come to you quickly and easily. Whenever you feel yourself beginning to "stress out" simply start up your handy relaxation technique, which is conveniently close at hand! You can also use this technique to give yourself regular "time-outs" during the day. This will assist in lowering your overall stress levels if practiced regularly.

holistic h I believe that it is so important to get the word out about holistic health and mental health. Keep in mind, 300 people die each day from side effects of their medication. There are other ways to work with some health issues without harmful or unnecessary medications. Sometimes, a holistic hcnage of lifestyle can make a big difference.

There are ways to get people to pay attention as well. We can use WebPages, blogs and thanks to new technology even radio. So today rather than blogging, I want to post the new radio show.

Holistic Mental Health and Healing

Bringing in the New Year With Honesty

honesty1I  was recently talking to someone who strongly stated that he thought it was best to just tell people what they want to hear rather than telling the truth. “It’s just easier that way.” The other thing is to not say anything at all. “Just don’t say anything at all.” It was a new one on me that not walking in your truth is easier than being honest.

I sat with this not just for days but for weeks. It was hard to get my head around the fact that people think lack of honesty is a healthy choice. In fact, not being honest creates an unhealthy person. Researchers have discovered people who are not honest have many health ailments including cardiac conditions and cancer. People who are unable to be honest with people they love in their lives also suffer from far more mental health issues. Depression and anxiety as well as living with the stress of guilt and shame.

Still the question remains, should we tell people only what we feel they want to hear in order to please them and keep the peace? I suppose for me, I would like to answer the question with a question. The answer would be, how authentic do you want to be?

I think honesty and integrity is all part of walking a higher path. In the 12 step program I am in, it really emphasizes being honest, and not just honest, but rigorously honest. You have to be honest in order to get sober and then remain sober. You have to be honest in order to be in your own skin. Yet it is funny, for many people, when you are being honest, they cannot take it and need to label you, or call you names or pass rumors about you.

Fear not though and turn the other cheek. They are the people who stand in fear. I have been called names for being honest. I have been called a liar, a trouble maker, I have been called a rabble-rouser, an instigator, and a few words such as #$!*& and of course ##$%&*# all because I make choices to be honest.

Now I am not talking about being brutally honest, just a plain and simple honesty. We all may say things like hmmm that was good, when in fact, maybe it was not the greatest. I am talking about basic truths.  Many people cannot tolerate the truth. In my line of work, being honest is important. As a mental health practitioner and dealing with people’s emotions, honesty is vital. Not only is being honest vital, but is a necessary path we need to walk in order to grow.

So next time someone tells you it is best to tell people things even if it is a lie, in order to make them happy, make sure you are aware that the dishonesty you are participating in affects your biology. Not being honest and authentic wrecks havoc on the immune system, your cardio vascular system, your state of mental health, and forget spirituality because a spiritual person simply doesn’t require the need to lie.

So let people call you names, point their fingers and spread rumors keep in mind which path you want to be on; The path of authenticity and walking with a higher power on a higher path, or the path of dishonesty and walking the path of resentments and anger and grudges?

Choose your path this New Year. Decide which path is best for you. Make a decision if you want to continue being angry, resentful and dishonest, or a decision to be more honest, spiritual and authentic. It is interesting which choices we all may take.

Happy New Years to all and remember the holistic pathway to mental health offers you choices in your healing, health and growth.

Do Emotions Cause Illness?

final spiral It is difficult at times to look at emotions and say, “What are emotions and how do they work?” Well you could look at emotions like energy in motion. Twirling and swirling around. You see, our emotions are energy and they are always in motion. We all know that our bodies are made up of molecules, and of course molecules are made up of atoms and yes atoms, protons, neutrons and electrons and they all twirl around each other in a wonderful dance. We may look solid but the truth is our bodies are just like all matter which means, we are energy moving at different rates resulting in something that we see and call solid. The fact is however, we are not solid. The molecular substance of our bodies is actually quite subject to thought and emotion.

Emotions operate on various stages.  They have a physical aspect, a psychological aspect and a spiritual aspect.  Emotions bridge thoughts, feelings, and actions are there to let us know how things are going in our lives.  When our emotions are positive and free flowing, (meaning allowing emotions to be felt and expressed with out resistance) then it raises the movement within the cells of our bodies and the cellular aspect of the body more fluid and freely flowing. When our emotions are negative, the cells in our body slow down and create a vacuum for illness and disease.

With all that in mind, let’s ask the question, does emotions cause or worsen illness? Of course you know the answer, and that is yes, but I think we need to recognize that it’s not so much the emotion itself  that causes illness but what we do with the emotion, or in many cases, what we don’t do with the emotions.

hide_face You see in American culture we carry a great deal of judgment and resistance to emotions and we normally call them good or bad. Happiness and joy is good, anger, fear and sadness is bad. We fail to look at these emotions are natural and normal. We are taught as small children to avoid certain emotions, to deny they are there, or cover them over with material things or things to do. We are taught at a young age, distractions.

But the truth is, distraction is not immune to our physical self and because we avoid these emotions, we then begin to internalize. Once we internalize them, we have stored these emotions and if not released, they create issues. I call this if there is an issue it is in the tissue.

It is said that 95% of all illness has an emotional component. In fact, science has now established that when you are in a state of distress and disharmony, your cells produce toxic chemicals that tend to deteriorate and degenerate the body.

Now I am not saying that hereditary or environmental factors don’t contribute to certain conditions or ailments, however, the emotional history and patterns of behavior over time does play very strong role with a person’s physical condition.

You see we need to understand that emotions are the very foundation on which we build our existence. Emotions not only inspire us, they truly can limit us as well.  When emotions are repressed or we distract ourselves from our emotions, the body’s natural defenses become confused and disrupted which then creates a sort of physical internal chaos. So releasing certain negative emotions can cause a shift in your energy freeing up energy blocks in your system. However, if you do not release the emotions, then illness can occur.

I am reminded of a forty-six year old female who was a grief counselor. She had lost her mother to cancer and she was unable to process her emotions because she felt she had to be strong for her clients as well as for her family. She was aware that emotions affected your physical body as much as your body affects your feelings and thinking. However, rather than looking at it, she wrapped herself in her work and chose not to apply this to herself. She soon became angry and bitter about the loss. She began to start having physical symptoms that brought her to the doctors. After several tests, the doctor concluded that this woman was a diabetic.

She was unable to find the sweetness in life because she could not deal with her emotions around her mothers death and the circumstances that surrounded it, thus it manifested in her pancreas. (by the way her mother died from pancreatic cancer) The pancreas does represent the sweetness of life and unresolved issues surrounding bitterness often manifest with diabetes.

When a person has stress or disharmony even unresolved grief, they express negative emotions that literally create toxic chemicals in the cells of the body. This causes the body to be in a state of degeneration and stagnation. Once the body is in this state, it become susceptible to attract viruses, harmful bacteria, and long term disease such as diabetes, heart problems and yes even cancer.

anxiety You see, when you are stressed out or perhaps you carry negative emotions such as anger, resentment, disliking and impatience. These emotions cause you to tense up and this tensing up can cause our biological processes to be impaired. So things such as transporting nutrients, hormone production, elimination, digestion, cell regeneration and rain function can become disrupted leading to a gradual deterioration in your whole system.

Another good example of how unexpressed emotions can create illness or disease is the story of a woman in her forties had a tumor in her right breast. She had a twenty-five year old son living with her and a very needy husband. She worked everyday and came home and took care of her husband and son. No one helped her with the household chores and both men in her life were extremely needy. She began to harbor resentment and anger but never told them how she was feeling. She went to see a holistic healer who had told her that the men in her life were emotionally breast feeding from her to get nourishment and she was not nourishing herself. She was told she would need to assert herself. She began to assert herself with her husband and son and stopped nursing them so much. Within months she went for another mammogram. The results had shown that there was no tumor-not even a trace. Problems with breasts can often mean that the person is not nourishing or nurturing themselves.

The mind and body are closely connected and one affects the other in ways that can either can harm or heal. The body responds to the way we think, act and feel. The emotional, neurological, and immune systems are all wired together. So when habits such as not taking care of yourself or negative and unresolved thoughts and feelings come up but remain unaddressed, a hormonal response is induced and an uncomfortable state of "dis-ease" begins.

In fact, when emotional health is unattended one may experience all sorts of physical complaints such as back or chest pain, extreme fatigue, insomnia, palpitations, sweating, weight gain or loss. The complaints however can become disease such as heart attack, strokes, and cancer. This is because emotions are rooted in deep C wiring, and can have a negative effect to the internal chemical environment. AKA, if there’s an issue it’s in the tissue. So you see our thought patterns and belief systems effect the health of our body.

Keep in mind that your mind may repress painful emotions and memories, but the body remembers it all, and it always tells the truth! It is called cellular memory and basically what this means is that though the emotion or memory isn’t part of our consciousness, past experiences or memories are stored in the body and have a powerful effect on how you behave and how you feel about yourself. If one brings these unconscious feelings and memories into awareness, one stands a great chance of healing and preventing not only physical illness but emotional health such as depression and anxiety.

Be careful with what you say and think as well. Statements like “It just worried me sick” or “It ate through me like a cancer” and “It broke my heart” are expressions we use that hint at the mind/body connection. Have you ever wondered if there really is any basis for these sayings? Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is telling us yes, our emotions can affect our immune system causing illness. PNI by definition is a multidisciplinary field, involving psychologists, neuroscientists and immunologists. This field looks at the scientific data on the interaction of the nervous and immune systems as well as the impact of behavior and psychological functioning. In short, PNI is based on we are what we think.

Human beings are the only creatures on earth that can change their biology by what they think or feel and according to research, exposure to stressful life experiences has been associated with changes in the immune system. In addition, experts have noticed that illness has many positive rewards. Ever notice when someone becomes sick they receive cards, flowers and gifts? Often people who are ill will gain praises from family and loved ones. In fact, sickness gives us permission to do things that we would not do otherwise. It makes it easier to say no to unwelcome people, burdens, and job demands in our lives. Being sick or not feeling good allows us to take time to rest, stay in bed, reflect, and gives us permission to relax. It also gives us permission to be loved because we attain a great amount of emotional support when we are sick.

By attempting to stay healthy, learning to give yourself permission to take time out for yourself, and building up your immune system, people have a head start in preventing illness and disease. So as you can see the mind and the body are clearly connected and what we think affects how we feel and how we feel effects health.

Holistic Modalities to Treating Addictions

An addiction is a strong recurring compulsion to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to that individual, possibly affecting his health, mental state, lively hood, well being, or social life. Addictions come in two forms physical and psychological (with some overlapping taking place.) physical addictions includes all the drugs, opiates, prescription drugs, cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, etc, things your body gets used to and you need to "feel normal". Psychological addictions are things you "think" you need and can include most anything with some common addictions being overeating, under-eating, video games, gambling, porn, etc. The list goes on and on! Whether you addiction is physical or psychological, keep in mind an addiction is an addiction- a behavior you want to change.
Holistic addiction treatment offers comprehensive, spiritual and progressive techniques that treat not just the addition but the full person behind the addiction. From meditation and massage to vitamin therapy and more, holistic techniques can offer lasting peace for those who engage it. Through various types of addiction therapy, there is one central component: Finding holistic and natural modalities to recovering from addictions can help people remain sober for the long term.

Acudetox
Acudetox, or the NADA Protocol, developed in 1974 by Dr. Michael Smith of New York, is now used in hundreds of rehab centers throughout the United States. Clients in early recovery often still have the desire to use the drug of their choice and have much angst over it. Both of these phenomena may prevent the individual from hearing what is being said to him or her in therapy sessions or 12-step meetings. The Acudetox protocol assists the person in gaining serenity and acceptance in the recovery process.
The treatment will detox the body by reducing the cravings and controlling the withdrawal symptoms (pains, stress, insomnia, night sweats, lack of energy). It will calm the Central Nervous System and re-balances the body’s energy. The treatment can help the body to restore itself with its natural healing qualities, leaving the person in recovery from drug abuse feeling calm and relaxed.
More importantly, Acudetox is clinically proven to have played a major role within drug misuse treatments, with clinical evidence showing that patients responded well to treatment, with the alleviation of cravings, anxiety, depression, and withdrawal symptoms.
The Acupunture detox locations are Shen Men (Spirit/Heavenly Gate), Sympathetic (Autonomic Nervous System), Kidneys, Liver and the Lungs. The Shen Men and Sympathetic points are very powerful: the two points share analgesic properties, relaxing the body physically and psychologically, relieving pain, lowering the blood pressure and allowing one to focus on inner peace as the natural endorphins release into the blood stream (natural endorphins are 100 times more powerful than morphine).
The reasons above are why Auricular Acupuncture for detoxification is so effective and accepted within drug rehab, drug community projects and prisons globally. The Sympathetic point balances disturbances of the Autonomic Nervous System, a strong pain killing point. It is a pain control principle point for thoracic and abdominal operations. The Sympathetic point will assist the other three vital organs (the kidneys, liver and the lungs) to function more effectively, allowing the body to expel the narcotic substances.

Aromatherapyaromatherapy

Smell is one of our five basic senses and is strongly associated with mood. Often a brief whiff of a particular fragrance can carry us away to other times and other places. Science has proven that aroma has a direct impact on the emotions. Certain aromas can stimulate the hypothalamus, which is the part of the brain that controls the endocrine system as well as other body functions. The hypothalamus can then activate the pituitary gland, which produces hormones that can affect both the physical and emotional body. In addition to their many other functions, hormones influence emotions and behavior. The use of essential oils and aromatherapy is a wonderful and effective means for emotional healing and rebalancing the moods and energy of throughout the day.

Ceremony and Ritual
Sacred ceremony and rituals have been used for centuries and can help people in recovery achieve and maintain sobriety. Ceremony and rituals are used to celebrate successes, to calm and relax, and to help produce feelings of euphoria. Not only can ceremonies be meaningful, they can also be purposeful for the group as a whole, for it is through such celebrations that clients are given the opportunity to actively participate in the affirmation of their values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Many holistic practitioners believe that through celebration, clients can bring to light their rites of passage towards their recovery from addiction and fundamentally change patterns thus allowing them to experience themselves and others in a sober and healthy way.
Drumming and Drumming Circles
I used to work at a rehab center that did a few alternative methods to recovery. One of the methods that I noticed really had a powerful effect on people drumming and drumming circles for substance abuse. The clients who participated indicated that drumming enhances recovery through inducing relaxation and enhancing theta-wave production and brain-wave synchronization. Drumming produces pleasurable experiences, enhanced awareness of preconscious dynamics, release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self. Drumming alleviates self-centeredness, isolation, and alienation, creating a sense of connectedness with self and others. Drumming provides a secular approach to accessing a higher power and applying spiritual perspectives.
Guided Imagery and Creative Visualization
Many people who are addicted to alcohol or other drugs started using these substances as a way to relax, ease tension, or improve self-esteem and confidence. They use these substances to escape from the people, places, and things in their lives. Guided imagery and creative visualization can help the person in recovery facilitate reaching these ideals without the assistance of harmful toxins. Breathing exercises and other relaxation techniques can be used to clear the mind and relax the body.
Homeopathy

homeopathy-stock_exhng

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which triggers the body’s natural system of healing. In homeopathy, a key premise is that every person has energy called a vital force or self-healing response. When this energy is disrupted or imbalanced, health problems develop. Homeopathy aims to stimulate the body’s own healing responses. It works on the principle of “like cures like” - that is, a substance that would cause symptoms in a healthy person. Homeopathy can play an integral role in treating addictions, not by magically “curing” a persons craving for a substance or behavior but rather by treating the individual cause of their addiction. Some people believe that homeopathic medicine works by stimulating the body’s own natural defenses. Homeopathic remedies will help the addictive personality by bringing him into a state of balance on all three levels of physical health, emotional health and mental health. This form of constitutional analysis results in the individual seeing his limited range of thinking and bring him into alignment with his higher purpose. The physical body balances and cravings are reduced. This process is deep and transforming.
Massage Therapy and Body Work
The use of alternative treatments for treating substance abuse has become more popular in the last few decades as holistic medicine is more widely accepted. The ancient art of massage has been used for centuries as a healing tool for a wide variety of therapies, including substance abuse and addiction to alcohol and drugs. Massage promotes healing and relaxation in the mind and body by using the combination of the systematic application of pressure and movement to manipulate the soft tissues of the body to cultivate well-being.
The human body has 12 main energy channels and these channels can become blocked. Licensed and qualified massage therapists are able to unblock energy which helps to relax clients as well as relieve internal stress that may be creating further stress or anxiety. This internal stress is a large factor in contributing to addiction to drugs and alcohol. The use of massage during drug rehab can help relieve stress and decrease negativity that contributes to an individual’s desire to use drugs and / or alcohol.
When a person becomes sober and is detoxifying their body, they may experience symptoms such as headaches, depression and anxiety. During substance abuse rehab treatment, massage helps encourage the detoxification process by gently removing toxins from the body. At the same time, this process releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural mood elevator.
Massage is used to help heal, reduce, and even altogether avoid certain symptoms of alcohol and drug abuse. Addiction experts understand that massage is related to psychosomatics and that the body and the mind are inextricably linked, and that healing the mind and body will inevitably lead to a much stronger and faster recovery from drug and alcohol abuse, and incorporate this wonderful modality into their treatment plan.
Meditation
Did you know that the words meditate, medicine, and medicate, share the same Latin root medicus, meaning to cure? Meditation is used by every culture on earth to relax the body, bring peace to the emotions, and expand spiritual knowledge. Modern health care is now integrating this practice into treating pain management, cancers and illnesses, stress reduction, and substance abuse recovery with a great deal of success. Most dis-ease is caused by some form of stress or other emotional component. Total healing of self cannot be attained by a chemically-induced state of mind that the affects of medication can produce. Meditation works in strengthening the mind by training, or “reprogramming” if you will, our way of thinking. Meditation requires positive, calm, and relaxing thoughts to occupy thinking. Meditation encourages self-love and high self-esteem. People with improved self-esteem are emotionally stronger and better equipped physically and mentally.

Nutritional Therapyhealthy_food

People with alcohol or drug addictions are usually malnourished and proper nutrition can correct nutritional shortcomings and help the body regain its strength and health. Experts know that people with substance abuse issues are often deficient in many important nutrients. Poor nutrition can severely affect a person’s judgment and can limit the mind and body’s ability to heal. When people feel better, they are less likely to relapse into their addiction. Because balanced nutrition helps improve mood and health, it is important to encourage a healthy diet in people recovering from alcohol and other drug problems. If your treatment center does not pay attention to your diet (Sugars and carbs) then your treatment center is not paying attention to your addictions. How we eat and what we put in our bodies is the ground work for recovery!
Vitamins and Minerals
Supplemental vitamins and minerals can help compensate for our genetics, aging, nutrition, stress, and coping with traumatic events. Vitamins and minerals can provide what nature hasn’t given us, or what life has taken from us. Supplements help the physical immune-deficient body; however, what people often fail to recognize is that supplements can also work in healing the emotional immune system. Supplements can improve mental health by treating and preventing mental illnesses, including many types of depression, mood and personality disorders, anxiety, addictions, alcoholism, as well as other ailments. In dealing with substance abuse, vitamin and minerals work wonders in helping with detoxifying from substances and rebuilding depleted immune systems. Vitamins and minerals are involved in one or more biochemical pathway, and/or physiological action that influence the function of the human brain.
Herbals for Alcoholism & Drug Addiction
The use of herbs can ease some alcohol or drug withdrawal symptoms from anxiety to insomnia and facilitate in detoxifying the body.
