How to Have Emotional Wellbeing

summerbreezewishes People with good emotional health are in control of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. They feel good about themselves and have good relationships. They can keep problems in perspective. Emotional health, then, is not about feeling good all the time but about respecting your emotions and accepting that they are all part of a healthy balanced, person.

Tools you will need include the following:
Healthy outlook
Balance
Self-kindness

Check to see if there is a problem. If you do not look at the problems, you can make the problems worse or create new ones. Address a problem right away, by doing so you keep problems smaller and more manageable.

Build self-confidence and act on it. First, act as if you are a confident person. Appear confident around people, even if you aren’t. Practice this because practice makes perfect. You must be willing to learn from your mistakes. Rather than viewing them with criticism, use them as a tool for learning. Finally, don’t self-blame. If you self-blame all the time, it will be difficult to have others believe in you. Self-confidence keeps emotional wellbeing balanced.

Try to keep a clear perspective. Is the glass half empty or half full? It is all a matter of how you perceive it. Try to have a positive attitude when looking at conditions that create emotional turmoil in your life.

Be kind to yourself. We tend to self-punish rather than pat ourselves on the back. Reward yourself with positive thoughts rather than criticisms. This is a positive stepping stone towards emotional wellbeing.

There are some simple tips and warnings about emotional wellbeing.
First, surround yourself with emotionally healthy people. If you do not do this, then why bother? Water follows the stream. If the people in your life are balanced, so are you. It is that simple. Try to do positive affirmations each day even if it is something as simple as “I a a good person.” Finally get down to the basics. Make sure you eat, sleep, and exercise for emotional balance.

Warning
People with who do not cultivate and sustain emotional wellbeing run higher risks of depression and other health issues.

This is Tyler Woods wishing you emotional wellbeing today.

Which is Better Omega 3 or Flax Seed?

fish_oil If I had a nickel for every time someone asked this question I would be rich. So let’s answer that question once and for all. There are three main types of fatty acids. EPA, DHA and ALA. Flax seed oil versus fish oil is as simple as EPA and DHA versus ALA.

The Omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil are the EPA and DHA fatty acids and the Omega 3 fatty acids in flax seed oil are the ALA fatty acids. It is harder for your body to get the Omega 3 out of the ALA fatty acids and that’s why it’s so important that any Omega 3 supplement you take be derived from fish oil. There is no harm in taking both flax seed oil and fish oil, if you’re taking the supplements to get the benefits touted for Omega 3 then you probably would be well off just taking fish oil supplements. Why bother paying so much money for both when the one works much better?

When taking fish oil supplements, make sure that the supplements you are taking are pharmaceutical grade fish oil. This will ensure that you’re getting quality fish oil supplements without getting any nasty toxins left in the fish.

In the battle of flax seed oil versus fish oil, both have their benefits, but omega fish oil definitely wins the battle.

Heartburn

heartburn01 There is nothing that is more disrupting to mental health than a bad case of heartburn. This is a common condition that affects millions of Americans each day. The burning sensation people feel starts in the upper part of the abdomen and slowly work its way up to the chest and throat and can radiate to the arms, and jaw. Heartburn is caused by stomach acid that works its way up towards the esophagus. There are many lifestyle changes people can do to prevent heartburn. Some people have found that the use of simple household remedies can help alleviate some of the common symptoms.

Household Foods
According to Martie Whittekin, author of Natural Alternatives to Nexium, Maalox, Tagamet, Prilosec & Other Acid Blockers, some of the foods in your kitchen can remedy heartburn. Papaya can help heartburn as it contains papain which reduces acid in the stomach. Papaya tablets can be purchased at the local health food store or you can eat the fruit after a meal. Pineapple has bromelian which is a digestive enzyme and eating a few fresh slices after a meal can aid in digestion and prevent heartburn. Watermelon as well as banana can also reduce acid in the stomach which creates heartburn.

Herbs
There is an assortment of herbs that can help tame the symptoms of heartburn. David Hoffman author of Healthy Digestion, states that herbs such as licorice root and chamomile can help decrease stomach acid. Slippery elm helps absorb the acid and coats the esophagus reducing irritation. Ginger can help relax the esophagus and reduce heartburn. All these herbs can be made into a tea and with the first signs of heartburn, try drinking a warm glass of one of these helpful herbs.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Paul Bragg who is the author of Apple Cider Vinegar Miracle Health system writes that apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a good remedy for heartburn. By mixing 2 tablespoons of unfiltered ACV in one cup of water and drinking it before you eat, it can alleviate heartburn symptoms. This is because some people do not have enough acid in their stomachs and heartburn can be caused by too little acid in the stomach. ACV can imitate stomach acids and aids balancing the alkaline in the stomach. You can add honey or agave nectar to help with the taste of the ACV.

Understanding Holistic and Mental Health

OshoZen-Healing In today’s modern world it seems like there is a reawakening holistic health, which is based upon the interrelations of mind, body and spirit and the use of more natural methods to heal.

Holistic healing is not intended to serve as a band-aid or a one time fix. It is an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness. I can’t begin to tell you how much research is out there that confirms that people who seek out alternative therapies take more responsibility for their own physical and mental health.

If there could be one definition to wellness that would be holistic health. Holistic comes from the word, whole, and what holistic health does is treat you as a whole. An important factor to remember when looking at holistic health is this approach of healing asks you to take responsibility for your own health because in holistic health, it is believed that when you take personal responsibility for your health, you will benefit from true healing.

Most people taking a holistic path understand that healing in part, is up to them. Holistic healing is really a lifestyle approach. Taking a holistic approach involves seeking the tools that will help us attract our desires and find personal power.

Although some alternative approaches have a long history, many remain controversial and will continue to be controversial because so often we resist what we simply cannot explain. However, it is important to know that people are finding that a holistic or integrative approach to mental health works well for them. It certainly has fewer side effects, and can be somewhat cost effective.

Most important, it also does not show up on your insurance later making you uninsurable. Did you know that if you are on an antidepressant for as little as 6 months, it can show up op your insurance as a reoccurring illness and some insurance companies wont insure you. Again this is not to say you should never take medications for mental health concerns, it means you have choices and that is what holistic health offers mental health.

See in the past, mental illness once occupied the harsh frontier of medicine. In today’s world, mental health patients are often treated with disregard for their whole person. The mind-body and spirit. Physicians go right after their symptoms, hoping to mask their symptoms with radical therapies and strong drugs. Studies show that current mental health patients are still receiving substandard care. Holistic mental health focuses on helping a person find their own strengths and use them to encourage and empower them to create a healthy and whole way of life.

Changing Views about Depression

hide_eyes_id93247_size500  Mainstream psychology must begin to change their views on depression if they want people to begin to heal. That can be a difficult task since medications for depression is the biggest money maker in our country. However, there are many psychologists, healers and clinicians who have discovered there are many reasons for depression and by using a holistic lens, can begin to help people.

For example, Caroline Myss, a medical intuitive, author and healer, suggests that it is possible that depression stem from toxic (negative) energy. She further suggests that depression can be a symptom that tells people all is not well. Adodea Judith, author and healer, believes that depression is a deficient third chakra. Adodea indicates that depression is caused by the "three demons" that dwell in the third chakra, fear, guilt, and shame.

Deepak Chopra, author, doctor and healer proposes that depression is the non-flow of energy. Alternative practitioners and holistic professionals such as Dr Andrew Weil indicates that other factors including diet and nutrition, lifestyle, and vitamin deficiencies need to be addressed when dealing with depression.

Healer and teacher Judith Cohen once told me "If there is an issue it’s in the tissue." The validity of that statement parallels what a variety of alternative practitioners believe in, that it is possible to store emotions in our tissues (cellular memory).

In American civilization, it is suggested that depression is in someway shameful. To a person not afflicted by depression, a depressed person appears to be lazy and giving up. In fact the Roman Catholic Church considered sadness and sorrow to be symptoms of tristitia, one of the cardinal sins. Therefore, depressed people are pushed by culture to view themselves as afflicted, suffering, or evil. Our society spends a great deal of time and energy denying and concealing depression instead of understanding and accepting it.

By taking a more holistic approach to depression they can begin to develop hope in a hopeless state of mind. People who take a spiritual and holistic approach to their depression often times can begin to understand that depression, though it is unpleasant, has a purpose and an important path for growth.

To Understand Everything Is to Forgive Everything

forgiveness The act of forgiving is more important for those who are forgiving than for those who need to be forgiven, for a very simple reason – those who make mistakes will still need to learn how to become better even if they are forgiven, since they are subjected to the laws of karma in which every bad action generates another bad action to themselves. Forgiving a person will not make him less guilty.

When we forgive we transform a negative mental state of resentment and anger into a positive mental state of goodwill. If we don’t forgive we isolate ourselves behind the barrier of our resentment. We need to renounce both pride and resentment in order to keep open the channels of communication and love that are so vital to life. The purpose of forgiveness is to rid oneself of negative emotions, not to make the other people feel guilty. It is a relief to be able to forgive, to let go of the messy baggage of obsessive resentment and feel free to love again with a lighter heart. We should be forgiving people all the time.

Much has been said and written about the importance of learning from mistakes, but not many people understand the beauty of this statement. When one learns through meditation and reflection, the events in the physical world that should happen in order to teach a person to walk in the path of love and wisdom, become unnecessary as the lesson was already learned. This is why it is said that when a person truly regrets from a mistake, his is the kingdom of heavens, no matter the gravity of the aggression, because what counts is not the result of the action but what has been learned.

The path to forgiveness may be challenging. Often our anger and resentment seem justified, and we become attached to it. However, forgiveness is taking positive action reconnecting us with our own power. We are no longer victims. Before we can experience love, we must be able to forgive, and we all deserve to love and be loved.

Holistic Counseling Safer than Antidepressants

big%20pharma Just a few weeks ago, an alarming report was released by the acclaimed New England Journal Of Medicine proving once again that the pharmaceutical industry has entirely too much influence in Washington, D.C. and specifically with the Food and Drug Administration. In short, the report shows the effectiveness of antidepressant drugs has been severely overhyped.

It turns out the pharmaceutical companies that produce antidepressant drugs are publishing the results of only positive clinical trial data in medical journals while suppressing all the negative data. In cases where negative clinical study data is published, the negative parts are being rewritten to appear positive or simply being omitted altogether.

Here are a few little facts for you to read.

  • Several high profile homicidal rages have been blamed on antidepressants. In fact, some of the worst acts of violence in American history are linked to antidepressant drugs.
  • A 19-year-old college student who had shown no outward signs of depression killed herself at an Eli Lilly & Company laboratory in Indianapolis where she had been participating in a company drug trial for an experimental antidepressant.
  • Women who take the antidepressant Paxil while undergoing some breast cancer treatments are significantly more likely to die than women who do not take the antidepressant, according to a study from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto.
  • Women who take antidepressant drugs have an increased risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD, sometimes called sudden cardiac arrest), according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
  • Postmenopausal women who take antidepressants significant increased risk for stroke and death compared with those who do not take antidepressants according to the Archives of Internal Medicine.

If you are feeling depressed, go to a counselor who is willing to talk and not just suggest antidepressant. Go to a wellness center and try to seek out some form of alternative health modality such as supplements, acupuncture, massage, nutrition or holistic counseling that encompasses the mind body spirit approach to healing.

Optimism and Health

spirit3 Good morning all. Tyler Woods here talking about optimism. I know yesterday we talked about gratitude, so let’s look at the fact that people who are optimistic are generally healthier, happier people and live longer. Now there is something to be grateful for. They tend to believe in good rather than bad and that there is hope for the future. With the current events in our country, perhaps the greatest natural health alternative we can offer ourselves is the power of positive thought and an optimistic outlook.

A growing body of evidence suggests the idea that optimism and positive thought promotes good health. People who are optimistic can actually protect themselves from getting ill. For example, if a cold is going around the office or neighborhood, a pessimistic person might say, "Great, everyone is catching a cold; it’ll just a matter of time before I get it." An optimistic person can use the power of positive thought to prevent catching a cold by saying or thinking, "It’s cold season, everyone is catching a cold, I best increase my vitamin C and take care of myself, so I wont catch it." Optimism can literally boost the immune system preventing contagious illnesses like colds and flu.

Optimism not only can help people remain healthy it helps people who are seriously ill or recovering from surgery heal faster. In research conducted at UCLA, people who were optimistic about their prognosis and outcome recovered quicker than those who were pessimistic about their recovery. Doctors concluded that the power of positive thought and hope was a significant factor in the healing process.

In addition to physical health, optimistic people also seem to have good mental health. They rarely become depressed, do not suffer with bouts of insomnia or anxiety, recover quicker from a personal crisis, and seem to achieve higher success in career and family activities.

If you are not an optimistic person, there is no need to worry. Optimism is an achievable goal. Start small! Set goals that are small enough to achieve then reward yourself each time you achieve that small goal. Try seeking out others who are optimistic. Since attitude can be contagious, being around others who have positive thoughts improves your own outlook. People who are pessimistic and constantly complaining can be infectious. It is essential to practice positive problem solving and believe in hope. Staying in the solution rather than the problem can help sustain optimism.

Optimism is more than just seeing everything as good it’s believing that everything will work out the way it needs to, and accepting that. Optimism is a choice we make and a stand we take when dealing with life on life’s terms. Believing in yourself and the world around you can help you feel healthier and happier.

Gratitude Equals Positive Attitude

gratitude The field of positive psychology has established a link between gratitude and good physical and mental health. Grateful people sleep better than extremely driven people. People with gratitude often take time to eat with their family rather than working late.

They put their family and self first before a job. They tend to prepare their food more often than eating out. They value recreation and fitness. Yes, these are the traits that coincide with gratitude contribute to physical and mental health, a stronger immune system, and fewer diseases and by far on less medication.

People with a healthy sense of well being have more self-confidence and friends. Studies show that social ties make people physically and mentally healthy and happier. Basically, it pays to be thankful for one’s life and accomplishments. When someone is always striving for something bigger, better, or always complaining and feeling victimized by something, people end up being less productive than pausing to give thanks for what is here now.

When you look at it as a whole, gratitude is like a cleansing agent for the soul. If we are grateful, then we move to what we want to do not what we have to do. Gratitude helps that glass from being half empty and makes it half full. More importantly, gratitude can help us to take focus away from self and personal needs and help us look at what we have been given and what we can offer others. It makes us realize that rather than living a life filled with stress, anxiety, and being unhappy, and teaches us that life is good and we are good.

So the best tip for holistic mental health is to use positive psychology and have an attitude of gratitude. It doesn’t come in a bottle, but I guarantee you, it works much faster than medication!
